An Excerpt from Arctic and Antarctic: Two Poles - Different Scores
In the September 2010 Geopolitics of Energy, Anis Bajrektarevic introduced readers to the
geopolitics of the polar regions, with special emphasis on the area within the Arctic Circle. In the present issue, Professor Bajrektarevic examines the economic potential of the region. He begins by discussing shipping – as the ice cap shrinks, certain sea lanes could soon be established through the Arctic Circle, shortening distances and saving time and money in the transport of goods across the globe.
The Arctic represents much more than a new transportation frontier, however; it is also rich with hydrocarbons and a variety of mineable ores. It is therefore no surprise that at least five northern nations are laying claim to the area. Let us suggest an international consensus can be reached eventually on the arctic sovereignty issue. Let us also assume that an earnest effort at regional development will ensue. Two questions then arise: will it be technologically or economically possible to reroute some global shipping through the Arctic? And how feasible will it be to extract the various mineral treasures locked in the permafrost of the far north? Professor Bajrektarevic offers some preliminary answers.
